また東南アジア / Back to South East Asia

明日から５月９日までまたラオスとカンボジアへ行ってくる。ラオスは去年も行ったが、そのときはルアンパバーンがメインだったが、今回は南の方へ行って、そのままメコン川沿いに流れてカンボジアへ行こうと思っている。ラオスは世界で最ものんびりした国の一つなのに対して、カンボジアはかなりクレージーなところだ（２０年間も続いた内戦のせいもあるだろう）。カンボジアへはおととしも行ったが、そのときはまだこのブログを始めていなかったからそのときの写真は「発表」していなかった。アンコールワットの遺跡群ではもちろん何百枚もの写真を撮ったが、以下はそれとは別の種類の気に入りの写真の何枚か。

Tomorrow, I'm off to Laos and Cambodia again, until May 9. I was in Laos last year too, but then my center of attention was Luang Prabang. This year, I plan to visit the very south of the country, and then trickle down along the Mekong river to Cambodia. While Laos is one of the most laid-back places on Earth, Cambodia is rather crazy (likely as the result of the decades-long civil war). I was there in 2005, but that was before I had started this blog, so few people have seen my pictures from that trip. Apart from the hundreds I took at Angkor Wat and environs, here are a few of my favorites.

ずっと前から書こうと思った、ちょっと古いネタだが...
僕は２メーターの身長のせいで日本でなかなか服を買えない。実はほかの国でもそんなに簡単に見つけるわけでもないが、日本は特に厳しい。そして一番難しいのは上着やシャツ。ズボンはすそ上げされていないものも売っているから、いろんな工夫ができる場合もあるが、シャツの袖を伸ばすことはできない。
それで去年の秋、なんと銀座で１０年ぶりに僕のサイズのシャツを売っているお店を見つけた。しかも僕のすきな柄で！フランスのブランドなので今の円安では決して安くなかったけど、３枚も買っちゃった。すごく気に入っているから、この数ヶ月、出かけるとき代わりばんこに使ってきた。いいでしょう？

桜もちの葉の料理の続編

こんどは魚（カレイ）で作ってみた。突合せは紫の「みんじゃが*」とそら豆と白ワインのソース。味はまあまあだったが、また作ることはないだろうと思う。問題は魚選びだったのかな。カレイはほとんど存在感がなくて、もっと身や味がしっかりした魚にすればよかったかもしれない（鯛とか）。でもまたおしゃれでしょう？

*「みんじゃが」：ダンサーの田中泯さんは農業もやっていて、パフォーマンスのときその有機野菜を販売している。このジャガイモもその一種だ。ジャガイモは元々アメリカ大陸のもので、この紫のイモはインカ族が食べたものを復元したそうだが、普通のジャガイモよりもさらに薄味で、ちょっとサトイモにも似ている。

かなりすごいアート

を先日みたよ！今、東京画廊とRoentgenwerkeのそれぞれのグループ展に参加している大平龍一という若い彫刻家のこと。
金曜日はRoentgenのオープニングへ行ったが、床のド間中にある「シマ」という大平さんの作品は最初はぴんと来なかった。ただのダンボールに見えてしまった。ところが！実はダンボールじゃなくて、ダンボールにそっくりの分厚い木の彫刻だ！その仕組みがわかってしまうと本当にびっくりするよ。すごい！
そしてひょっとしてもっとすごいのは東京画廊に展示されている「たたみ」だ。たたみには見えるが、実は５ヶ月（！）をかけて、木に彫った「たたみ」の彫刻だ！すごい修行だね。
それぞれのグループ展のほかのアーティストは多少負けてもしょうがないだろうけど、決して悪くないからお見逃しなく。

Kanamara Matsuri

Yesterday was unseasonably hot (25 degrees) and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, so I sneaked away from my work to visit the yearly Kanamara Matsuri in Kawasaki. Though I've known about this fertility festival for years, it was actually my first time as it involves a) knowing the exact day (turns out to be the first Sunday in April), b) fair weather (last year it was raining heavily), c) not having to work like crazy to meet a Monday morning deadline (a common problem), and particularly d) having to get up rather early in the morning in order not to miss the parade.
Phallic shrines and related festivals are not that uncommon in Japan (or the rest of Asia) but nowhere else have I seen such a shockingly pink specimen. Apart from the parade, the festival had a surf band loudly announcing 「今年もチンポコ祭りが来たぞ！」, suggestively shaped candy, hula dancers, cross dressers, carved radishes, and all the usual matsuri food and drinks. Immensely popular with foreigners (I too felt like a tourist for a change, hence this entry in English), it's also a big hit among Japanese of all ages and genders. Well, the pictures below speak for themselves.
("Kanamara", by the way, translates as "Steely Dick", as it were, in contrast to the famous literary dildo Steely Dan, which was from neighboring Yokohama.)
