Tomtar på loftet

Japanese packaging with weird "English" is of course a commonplace, but the messages, when coherent at all, are rarely about things Swedish. This one, however, is from a bakery called Hokuo, which appropriately means "Scandinavia". But...

By the way, the bread I bought was not particularly Scandinavian in any way (a burdock root pastry with mayonnaise?) but it was quite tasty anyway.

さて、日本の読者にちょっと説明しなきゃいけないかもしれない。スウェーデンでは tomte は本来、森に住んでいると思われた妖精で、妖精らしくいたずらが好きだったが、パン作りとのかかわりは聞いたことない。(といっても、そんな説もどこかにあるかも知れない。そのパン屋さんが自分で考えた話ならそれも面白いけど。）また、19世紀のイメージの tomte （右)はあの合成怪物のサンタクローズの原型の一つでもある(スウェーデン語ではサンタのことを jultomten （＝「クリスマスのトムテ」という）。
